About

Helping you feel safe enough to grow.

Writer, speaker, counselor, coach — Assata helps people tell themselves the truth and then do something with it. This is the whole of her work, not just the clinical part.

Assata Thomas, LMHC
The Work

The work outgrew the room.

Assata means “She who struggles” — and my purpose is to serve as well as to heal.

I started out working with people one at a time. The same thing kept coming up: high-functioning on the outside, overwhelmed on the inside. People minimizing their own pain, normalizing chaos, and calling themselves “toxic” without ever understanding what was going on underneath.

Those conversations were too big for one room. So I took them to stages, into workshops, onto podcasts, and into the community I build with — coaching, teaching, and making content that helps people feel less alone in what they're carrying and better equipped to change it.

One person or a room of hundreds, the job is the same: build a grounded, judgment-free space where telling the truth leads somewhere.

What I Stand For

The foundation of everything.

01

Honesty without shame

We name what's real — not to judge you, but to give you power to change it.

02

Culturally aware care

Your story doesn't exist in a vacuum. We honor culture, identity, and context in every conversation.

03

Practical, not performative

No fluffy advice — just grounded tools, clear language, and next steps you can actually take.

Roles

How I show up.

Speaker, coach, counselor, writer, host. Different rooms, different formats — one throughline.

The clinical training sits quietly underneath all of it — licensed in New York, 7+ years of practice, an M.S. from LIU Brooklyn. It's the floor this work stands on, not the whole of what I do.

Assata is no pressure and no judgement. She is honest in a supportive way. She feels more like a friend or family member who cares. She allows one to see the error of their own ways without pointing a finger or reaching conclusions of her own. Being in this space with her feels safe for myself and my partner — we are closer and understand each other better as a result of working with her. Thanks Assata!

She provides such great avenues of how to go about things differently that while a bit scary, have been effective when implemented. 5 stars across the board. I appreciate you Assata!
